September sightings at Xigera

As the weather warms up across the Okavango Delta, the receding waters have given way to some beautiful sightings at Xigera this month. Shrinking water holes and receding flood plains call for predators and prey to gather at the water’s edge, whilst the skyline becomes a canvas to capture birds in flight. This is thanks to the transitional temperatures as we shift from winter to spring calling forth the return of our migratory birds.

One safari captured the union of our diverse wildlife at Xigera as the elephants enjoyed the remaining waterways of the Delta amidst the birds. The receding waters across the floodplains result in an exposure of the fish and marine life that dance below, causing a swell of fishing from our birdlife.

The beautiful dusk evenings brought forth by the warmer weather has also created an idyllic backdrop for sightings of our birdlife. With over 600 bird species recorded in Botswana, 11 of which are owls, sightings like these are frequent yet no less magical. Openbill storks, pelicans, egrets, and spoonbills have all been spotted here on the Okavango Delta in recent safaris.

Our herd animals are continuing to thrive across our grasslands. With zebras, elephants, giraffes, and hippos all gracing our plains, the Okavango Delta is an oasis for these majestic species, including member of the big five, the African Buffalo.

Our herds are also continuing to grow here at Xigera. The summer months have seen an array of calves and foals welcomed to our reserve, and our elephant herds in particular are continuing to expand.

A number of our land safaris have had the privilege of seeing these new calves thrive as they play amidst the grasslands.

Finally, alongside our herd animals, the predators at Xigera continue to spark an abundance of joy and marvel from our visitors. The lion cubs of the Western Pride are growing in cheekiness and their playful spirit fails to be hindered by the summer heat. Their growth in strength, size, and character continues to warm the hearts of all of us at Xigera.
