It has truly been an honour to partner with Julian and Trevyn McGowan, the founders of Southern Guild, to create our Living Gallery at Xigera Safari Lodge. The breadth of the project, in collaboration with Toni Tollman, Philip Fourie and Anton de Kock, is a testament to Julian and Trevyn’s vision and passion. Here, we speak to Trevyn about what inspires this passion…
What is your idea of perfect happiness?
Travelling with all five of my children, going to places we’ve never been before. The more intrepid the better.
What is your greatest fear?
Having to retire.
Which living person do you most admire?
I am particularly inspired by women authors; Zadie Smith, Joan Didion, Virginia Woolf, Susan Sontag, Doris Lessing and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie - those that push and pull your brain.
What historical figure do you most identify with?
Mary Poppins.
Who are your heroes in real life?
Those that put their lives at risk to save others or to make the world a better place – those who lean in.
What is your greatest extravagance?
Dinners out. I love nothing more than hours at a table with the whole family – with so many of us it tends to be a hefty bill.
Which words or phrases do you most overuse?
'Where are we having supper?'
What or who is the greatest love of your life?
Julian, my husband and partner in crime.
What is your most marked characteristic?
Dogged determination.
What do you consider your greatest achievement?
Four natural water births, no pain relief.
What is your favourite journey?
To the airport.
What is your greatest regret?
All the art I didn’t buy at the time.
What is your most treasured possession?
My Apple Mac… followed closely behind by the Southern Guild collectable design collection.
Where would you like to live?
Right here, right now.
What is your favourite occupation?
Working with my team.
When and where were you happiest?
Right here, right now.
Which talent would you most like to have?
About those women writers above…
If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
About 30 years.
What is your motto?
Yes, I’ll do it!
We honour the women at Xigera who have created our beautiful living art gallery.
